The Role-Playing Game of the Year (Gioco di Ruolo dell’Anno, GdRdA) is the most important Italian award dedicated to role-playing games published in the Italian language. It is presented annually during Lucca Comics & Games to the title that stands out for originality, quality of the rules, narrative depth, and editorial care. Today, it serves as a key point of reference for publishers, designers, and fans, supporting the growth and spread of role-playing games in Italy.

Davide Scano
Coordinator
2014 – present
Born in Lucca in 1989, Davide Scano is a telecommunications engineering student and a lifelong lover of role-playing games in all their forms. In 2009, he began working with Lucca Comics & Games as a referee for the national team-based RPG tournament Ruolimpiadi. In 2013, he became the event’s lead organizer, achieving a record number of participating teams.

Daniele Prisco
Chair
2013 – present
Born in 1979, Daniele Prisco discovered the world of role-playing games on a distant night in 1991, when someone introduced him to a mysterious red box. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he organized various tournaments in the Cagliari gaming scene and, in 2003, co-founded Il 5° Clone, one of the most influential Italian websites about Dungeons & Dragons. In the meantime, he also developed a passion for board games and collaborated with many associations, including the Cagliari chapter of La Tana dei Goblin, to promote gaming in all its forms. Since 2010, with the Mondi Sospesi association, he has helped organize Giocomix, the largest event in Sardinia dedicated to games and comics. He served as a juror for Lucca Games’ Best of Show award in 2011 and 2012.

Giovanni Bacaro
Vice Chair
2019 – present
Born in 1978, Giovanni Bacaro is a citizen of the world with a deep love for Japan, and an associate professor at the University of Trieste. His first encounter with RPGs came when he ran a session using the red box, and he never looked back. Over the years, he has followed the evolution of role-playing games with growing interest in their scientific aspects applied to social contexts. He founded the Trieste-based association La Costola dei Barbari and launched the “diffused game library” experiment, followed by his involvement in Federludo, supporting Italy’s broader gaming ecosystem. He has long gone by the nickname Ishar the Grey, a reference not just to his beard, but to his identity as a gamer.

Michele Bellone
2020 – present
A science journalist, nonfiction editor at Codice Edizioni and public speaker, Michele Bellone teaches courses on science and storytelling at the Master in Science Communication program at SISSA in Trieste and at the Holden School. Born in 1980, he began playing role-playing games at age eleven with the legendary Dungeons & Dragons red box and has never stopped since. He is the author of Incanto. Storie di draghi, stregoni e scienziati, a book that explores the relationship between science and fantasy in literature, cinema, comics, and RPGs. He has served as speaker and moderator at events on games and science at Lucca Comics & Games and Play Modena.

Osiride Luca Cascioli
2022 – present
By day, he works in IT; by night, he’s a longtime role-player whose favorite catchphrase has become: “Oppalá il GdR!”After countless years playing every conceivable version of Dungeons & Dragons, he turned to the theoretical and practical study of the role-playing landscape, both in Italy and abroad. Now he knows a lot, perhaps too much. But beware: with a snap of his fingers, he can erase half of your character sheet. Or so he believes. Don’t tell him otherwise… it might hurt his feelings.

Giacomo Cornacchia
2025 – present
A well-rounded gamer, Giacomo is passionate about board games, tabletop RPGs (live-action ones too), video games, and more. In recent years, he has poured this passion into the Kraken APS association, with which he plays and helps others discover the joy of gaming at events and conventions all over Italy. Introduced to RPGs through Dungeons & Dragons, he now dives deep into the world of indie and game design in search of new hidden gems to broaden his horizons and quench his insatiable thirst for knowledge.

Laura Grossi
2023 – present
Known as “Mother of Dragons,” Laura has been active online since 2016, when she began sharing her thoughts on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire on YouTube. She hasn’t stopped since. A die-hard fantasy fan and lover of the smell of freshly printed books, she’s a YouTuber, Twitch streamer, cosplayer, and compulsive reader. And yes, she also loves role-playing games.

Marzia Possenti
2020 – present
Marzia has been helping organize gaming events for more than 15 years. Along with Lorenzo Trenti and Marcello Missiroli, she co-founded Flying Circus, a movement devoted to spreading game culture focused on role-play and storytelling, experimentation, fun, and shared experiences. For the past 20 years, she has written about tabletop RPGs, live-action games, and story games, both solo and collaboratively. Some of her works have won prizes, such as the Labirinth and La Maschera e il Volto awards. She lives in a house full of books and games, shared with a husband, a dog, a cat, and a turtle.

Alessia Zannoni
2025 – present
A theatre and game practitioner, Alessia took her first (very slow) steps into the world of role-playing games in 2014. Since then, she has woven RPGs into her work, bringing them into theatres, schools, and even to Japan as a tool for cultural exploration while traveling. Her love for conversations and co-creating worlds and stories led her to launch the podcast Gusci di Ruolo, where collective narratives come to life. At conventions, she’s easy to find: just look for the table covered in rulebooks, turtles, and books about Japan.

Award
Publishers, distributors, and designers.
Traditional role-playing games, possibly including multimedia components, are eligible if they are being published for the first time within the award’s eligibility period and have never been submitted in previous editions. Only products entirely in the Italian language are accepted. Video games and live-action role-playing rulebooks are excluded.
New editions of previously published games are accepted only if they present significant innovations, at the jury’s discretion.
Expansions and setting books are not eligible for the competition.
Games published between June 1 of the previous year and May 31 of the current year are eligible. Games released by December 31 of the previous year must be submitted within two weeks of the opening of the submissions period. Games released in the current year must be submitted by May 31. In both cases, copies must be delivered within two weeks of approval and no later than June 15.
Authors may submit their own role-playing games within two weeks of the opening of submissions. The jury will assess eligibility within 15 days. If approved, they will propose that Lucca Crea acquires the necessary copies for evaluation. If rejected, the game can no longer be submitted by either the author or the publisher.
Once the online form has been completed, submission is considered final only when the game is made physically available to the jury, in accordance with the methods and timelines stated in the rules. Printed games must be shipped to Lucca Crea (Corso Garibaldi 53, 55100 Lucca) in 7 copies—one for each jury member—by the stated deadlines. Confirmation of acceptance must be received before sending: games sent without approval will not be returned. The games remain the property of the jury members and may be freely used. For games published exclusively in digital format, the material must be sent to Lucca Crea via electronic means.
The award ceremony is held during Lucca Comics & Games, as part of the official prize-giving event at the Teatro del Giglio.
